| Agency, Institution or Organization: |
Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation |
| Short Description: |
We propose to assess the relative reproductive success of Umatilla summer steelhead using a pedigree analysis and a laboratory-tested strontium progeny marker injection. |
| Information Transfer: |
The results from study will be published in peer-reviewed technical journals, will be posted on BPA and CTUIR web-sites, and will be presented to managers to assist in the continued improvement of Umatilla summer steelhead population performance. |

Accomplishments |
| 2005 |
Completed a three day strontium injection experiment using 12 adult summer steelhead holding at Three-mile Falls dam. Re-analyzed 720 otoliths using an upgraded microprobe. |
| 2004 |
Completed a second experimental trial by transporting 23 adult summer steelhead from Umatilla River to the Fish Performance and Genetics Laboratory, Oregon State University. Completed growth experiment. Analyzed 420 otoliths using microprobe. |
| 2003 |
Artificially spawned 21 females and 7 males at the Big Canyon acclimation facility and transported green eggs and milt to Wallowa Hatchery of Enterprise, OR for fertilization and incubation of eggs. Sub sampled approximately 700 eggs from each fish. |
| 2002 |

| Recommendation: Fundable
|
| NPCC Comments: This is an innovative project with potential applicability and benefit to other projects and situations requiring estimation of reproductive success. Assessment of relative reproductive success and supplementation is a key issue in fish culture in the basin. Objectives are clear and tied in with a real world problem. Methods appear sound. The project is a few years old and has progressed from small scale lab testing to verify the utility and transmission of the elemental tag to a proposed field test. This phase of the project is the logical next step. |
